My favourite board games

Splendor Duel

A recent obsession of ours has been Splendor Duel, which is a 2-player version of the original Splendor. It’s a lot of fun, and I really recommend it! Although in saying that, that may be because I am on a recent winning streak against my partner. Oddly, our wins aren’t very evenly distributed. I’ll lose 4 games in a row, and then he’ll lose 4 games in a row. Not really sure if that’s luck or once you get in a winning mood it gets a lot easier to win? I will say that once you get on a losing streak it is quite demotivating, although that makes it all the more fun when you finally get a win again.

The gameplay is to firstly collect gems (the little coins), and use those gems to buy cards. The cards have points on them, and most of the time come with a gem built-in as well. As you accumulate more cards, you’ll be able to buy more expensive cards using both the coin gems as well as the built-in gems on your cards. Eventually you’ll need to reach 20 points to win the game.

The game is very compact, which I love as well - space is at a premium in our tiny Japanese apartment.
